PURPOSE
This study aimed to identify the level of knowledge on preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and nicotine dependency among smoking male college students, and to examine the predicting factors of nicotine dependency.
METHODS
This study was conducted as cross-sectional descriptive research using structured questionnaires. Data were collected from 411 smoking male college students (22.5+/-2.59 yr) at two universities located in two cities in Korea from September 2012 to April 2013. Logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate age-adjusted odds ratios of nicotine dependency.
RESULTS
The mean value of nicotine dependency was 4.2+/-1.96 and the percentage of participants who had strong nicotine dependency (> or =7) was 10.7%. Logistic regression analysis showed that, when adjustment was made for age, nicotine dependency was predicted by the frequency of alcohol drinking (> or =3 times/week), knowledge on CVD prevention, the age starting drinking, and the total length of smoking.
CONCLUSION
Nicotine dependency was strongly related to the frequency of drinking alcohol and lower knowledge on CVD prevention. Therefore, male college students who have a dependent smoking habit and drink alcohol frequently need to take more interest in health through educational counseling to modify their lifestyle behaviors and to have preventive knowledge related to CVD.

PURPOSE
This study was performed to identify job competencies and needs for job education perceived by new community health practitioners.
METHODS
This study used a qualitative research design. Eight new community health practitioners participated in this study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using content analysis.
RESULTS
Five job competencies were identified in this study, including primary care, public health management, interpersonal relationship, teaching and counseling, and leadership. The contents of job education that they needed were management of major symptoms and chronic diseases, understanding and prescription of medications, emergency responses and care, management of endemic diseases, planning and management of public health programs, writing official documentsand computer works, and leadership training. The learning methods they preferred were connecting theory and practice, situation- or case-based learning, skill- or practice-based learning, and increased opportunities of clinical practice.
CONCLUSION
The findings of this study provided the direction of job education for new community health practitioners. Job education for new community health practitioners needs to consider the job competencies and educational needs identified in this study.

PURPOSE
This study attempted to identify the effectiveness and substantiality of a dementia education program for family caregivers of the demented elderly.
METHODS
This quasi-experimental study using a nonequivalent control pretest-posttest design was carried out from April 15 to July 29 in 2012 with 137 subjects divided into an experimental group (n=70) and a control group (n=67). This study examined the subjects' general characteristics, and evaluated their nursing method four times, respectively, before the intervention, right after the intervention, and 2 and 4 weeks after the intervention, and then analyzed collected data through t-test and chi2-test.
RESULTS
In the experimental group that had received the dementia education, the nursing method score was significantly higher right after the intervention (t=8.33, p<.001) and 2 weeks after the intervention (t=8.01, p<.001) than before the intervention, but their score 4 weeks after the intervention was not significantly different from that of the control group (t=1.08, p=.28).
CONCLUSION
The dementia education was found to be effective in improving the nursing method of family caregivers of the demented elderly. This study implies that further follow-up dementia education is necessary between 2 and 4 weeks to maintain the effectiveness.

PURPOSE
This study examined the effectiveness of a forest-experience-integration intervention in community dwelling cancer patients.
METHODS
The study was done with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of the present study were 53 community dwelling cancer patients who were registered in a community health center in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The subjects were divided into an experimental group (n=26) who participated in the forest-experience-integration intervention and a control group (n=27) who did not participate. Data were collected from May to June in 2011. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS PC+ 19.0 through chi2 test, and independent t-test.
RESULTS
There were significant differences between the groups in depression (t=-4.51, p<.001), self-regulation resilience (t=6.95, p<.001), interpersonal resilience (t=10.10, p<.001), positivity resilience (t=9.67, p<.001), and total resilience (t=13.93, p<.001) measurements.
CONCLUSION
The forest-experience-integration intervention delivered to community dwelling cancer patients was an effective method for relieving depression and enhancing self-regulation resilience, interpersonal resilience, positivity resilience, and total resilience, and can be utilized as an effective nursing intervention for community dwelling cancer patients.

Abstract PDF: PURPOSE
This study was done to identify the relationships among diabetic health leader attitude, diabetic knowledge, and health conservation in highly educated elders.
METHODS
The participants were 119 elders aged 65 or more who were attending the senior welfare centers in D and K City and had at least a high school degree. Data were collected from June 10 to July 7 in 2013. Data analysis included one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression, done with the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program.
RESULTS
A positive correlation was found among diabetic health leader attitude, diabetic knowledge, and health conservation. Health conservation explained 26% (beta=.31) and diabetic knowledge explained 2% (beta=.18) of the variance in diabetic health leader attitude.
CONCLUSION
The results indicate that to increase diabetic health leader attitude among highly educated elders, health leader programs are needed for increasing their diabetic knowledge and health conservation.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with perceived job satisfaction of TB control nurses in Korea.
METHODS
This study employed a descriptive survey research design using data for 189 TB control nurses. Variables included in this study were demographic, social, and work-related characteristics (including job stress), and job satisfaction. ANOVA, t-test,and multiple regression analyses were performed using SPSS/WIN 19.0 program.
RESULTS
The mean value of perceived job satisfaction was lower in the subjects (2.9+/-0.41) than in general nurses working in other departments. In multiple regression analysis, factors associated with TB control nurses' job satisfaction were job stress (beta=-.281, p<.001), marital status (beta=-.229, p<.001), and the number of TB control nurses employed (beta=.200, p<.001).
CONCLUSION
The results of this study showed that job satisfaction was associated more significantly with job-related characteristics than with non-job-related variables in workplace. Along with increased TB control nurse staffing, efforts should be made to reduce negative workplace issues such as job stress and inappropriate pay to improve the subject's job satisfaction.

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a social support program on family caregivers' role strain in elderly long-term home care.
METHODS
The research adopted a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The number of participants was 25 in the experimental group and 25 in the control group sampled among family caregivers in elderly long-term home care. The experimental group participated in a 10-session social support program, which consisted of physical, emotional, informational, and material support. The effect of the program was evaluated by measuring family caregivers' role strain.
RESULTS
The experimental group showed a significant decrease in family caregivers' role strain in elderly long-term home care.
CONCLUSION
The result suggests that the social support program was effective in decreasing family caregivers' role strain in elderly long-term home care. There is a need to develop more effective and systematicsocial support programsfor family caregivers of elderly long-term home care.

PURPOSE
The objective of this study is to analyze systematically the trends of experimental researches in the area of community health nursing.
METHODS
This is a study based on literature review, which analyzed 137 experimental research papers in the Journal of Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing, from the first issue in 1989 to those in 2012.
RESULTS
1) The proportion of experimental researches in the total published papers was 14.9%. 2) The mainly used research method was quasi-experiment, which was 60.6% of them, and there was no RCT. 3) Convenient sampling was used in 95.6% of the researches. 4) Only 5.1% were reviewed for keeping the ethical standards for the study objects by the IRB. 5 When classified by the Omaha Classification System, psycho-social researches were most frequent, which were followed by physiological, health-related behavioral, and environmental ones in order of frequency.
CONCLUSION
This study found that the proportion of experimental research papers was increasing in the 2000s and ethical standards were required more rigorously. However, it was suggested that the research design be more elaborated and sampling methods be manifested to reduce research bias and errors.
