Purpose This study examined whether changes in national identity are associated with contemporaneous changes in self-rated health (SRH) among multicultural adolescents in Korea, with particular attention to the transition from elementary to middle school.
Methods This study utilized five time-point data (2019-2023) from the second panel of the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS) conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI). Piecewise latent growth modeling was applied to estimate trajectories before and after the elementary-middle school transition and to test whether piecewise change in national identity predicted piecewise change in SRH, adjusting for gender, body mass index, parental nationality, self-rated economic condition, and stress.
Results In unconditional models, national identity increased across the elementary-school years and decreased in middle school, whereas SRH declined throughout, with a steeper drop during middle school. In conditional models, national identity showed positive, period-specific associations with SRH: higher initial national identity was linked to higher initial SRH, a greater increase in national identity during elementary school corresponded to a minor decline in SRH during the same period, and less decline in national identity during middle school was associated with a smaller concurrent decline in SRH.
Conclusion Among multicultural adolescents, national identity and SRH are intimately associated within developmental periods, and both are sensitive to school-level transitions. Continuous, school- and community-based support that fosters stable, positive national identity across the elementary-middle school transition may promote adolescents’ health.
Purpose This study is an integrated literature review to analyze health problems and social determinants of multicultural adolescents in South Korea. Methods An integrative review was conducted according to Whittemore & Knafl’s guideline. An electronic search that included publications from 2018 to 2020 in the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, RISS, and KISS databases was conducted. Of a total of 67 records that were identified, 13 finally met full inclusion criteria. Text network analysis was also conducted to identify keywords network trends using NetMiner program. Results The health problems of multicultural adolescents were classified into mental health (depression, anxiety, suicide and acculturative stress) and health risk behaviors (smoking, risky drinking, smartphone dependence and sexual behavior). As social determinants affecting the health of multicultural adolescents, the biological factors such as gender, age, and visible minority, and the psychological factors such as acculturative stress, self-esteem, family support, and ego-resiliency were identified. The sociocultural factors were identified as family economic status, residential area, parental education level, and parents' country of birth. As a result of text network analysis, a total of 41 words were identified. Conclusion Based on these results, mental health and health risk behaviors should be considered as interventions for health promotion of multicultural adolescents. Our findings suggest that further research should be conducted to broaden the scope of health determinants to account for the effects of the physical environment and health care system.

PURPOSE In South Korea, suicide mortality has rapidly increased, so it has become a major public health concern. Multicultural adolescents are regarded as a high-risk group due to their situation. In this study, we compared the prevalence and risk factors of suicide ideation between Korean and multicultural adolescents. METHODS Data from the eleventh Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2015), collected by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, were statistically analyzed using the descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression. The total participants were 63,376 in numbers. They were composed of 62,649 (98.9%) Korean and 727 (1.1%) multicultural adolescents. RESULTS I found that the prevalence of suicide ideation was significantly higher among the multicultural adolescents (15.8%) compared with those of Korean (11.3%). The risk factors of suicide ideation in the Korean group were co-residence without family, poor perceived health status, depressive mood, high stress level, poor perceived happiness level, and experience of violence. Conversely, the risk factors of the multicultural group were smoking, depressive mood, and experience of violence. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that appropriate and practical prevention strategies should focus on psychological and environmental factors in order to prevent suicide ideation and reduce suicide behavior in Korean and multicultural adolescents.

PURPOSE This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between cultural competency and the importance of nurses' qualities perceived by undergraduate nursing students. METHODS Researchers developed two tools for this study after reviewing the related literature and conducting research team workshops: questionnaire of cultural competency and the importance of nurses' qualities. 200 nursing students were recruited in convenient sampling to respond to these questionnaires. Of nurses' 10 qualities, major affecting factors on the cultural competency were identified by stepwise multiple regression analysis. RESULTS The nursing students perceived technical nursing skills and professional nursing knowledge as nurses' most important qualities. However, 'having a passion for patient care', 'demonstrating strong nursing profession's code of ethics??and 'teaching and research ability' were found as significant influencing factors on the variance of the cultural competency. These three factors explained 16% of the total variances of the cultural competency (F=13.98, p<.001). CONCLUSION The educational strategies to improve cultural nursing competency need to incorporate students' expectations for the professional nurses' roles. Also, further studies need to develop reliable and valid measurement tools for cultural competency

PURPOSE This study aimed to compare health risk behaviors among adolescents according to whether or not the parents were born in South Korea. METHODS From the database of the ninth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS), the researchers classify adolescents into four groups: those whose parents were both native Korean, those whose mother only was a native Korean, those whose father only was a native Korean, and those whose parents were both foreign-born. Data were analyzed using chi2-test and multiple logistic regression with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. RESULTS The adolescents with a foreign-born mother were less likely to smoke and drink alcohol than those with native Korean parents, but for other health risk behaviors the two groups were similar to each other. The adolescents with a foreign-born father were at a greater risk of drug use, intercourse, depression and violence at school than those with native Korean parents. The adolescents whose parents were born abroad were at a greater risk of smoking, drug use, intercourse, depression, suicidal ideation and violence at school than those with native Korean parents. CONCLUSION Health promotion approaches differentiated by the type of multi-cultural family are needed in order to improve multi-cultural adolescents' health.
